BOXERAPY

What Is Boxerapy?

Boxerapy is a form of fitness therapy which uses boxing pad-work activities to connect and respond to difficult emotions and triggers. This unique approach is guided by specific focus areas, designed to reflect a variety of trauma induced behaviours in young people & is responded too using tailored pad-work activities to help regulate emotions and develop coping strategies for young people. Boxing Mentors will engage with young people over a number of weeks on a 121 basis, working within the guidelines of a tailored programme, which is agreed collaboratively with school professionals and collective care network.

What is Trauma Informed Boxing?

Trauma-informed boxing is an intervention model used to support young people, grounded in the understanding that trauma exposure can significantly affect an individual’s neurological, biological, psychological, and social development.  Boxerapy considers theses factors, looking at the whole child by assessing the perceived troublesome behaviour in school, and creating a safe space for the child to explore the emotions behind the behaviour through boxing and pad-work exercises.

How Does Boxerapy Help Prevent Children From Getting Excluded From School?

Boxerapy on its own cannot prevent permanent exclusions however research has shown that a multifaceted approach from schools, policymakers, communities and alternative disciplinaries such as Boxerapy must collaborate to implement effective prevention strategies. The Boxerapy model is designed to target early intervention and works best in schools so that young people can access the support they need as and when early warning signs become apparent.

Does Boxing Therapy Involve Fighting?

No. The program involves non-contact pad-work activities in a safe environment conducted by a trained Boxing Therapist on a 121 regular basis.  The program is not intended for amateur boxers however, can appeal to students who have a keen interest in fitness or martial arts. That being said, Boxerapy can be adapted to suit all fitness levels and is intended to empower young people physically and mentally, not teach them how to fight.

Can Boxerapy Help Regulate Emotions?

Through the programs 8 focus areas, Boxerapy can teach young people self-control and discipline, enabling them to use their sessions as a means to release aggression in a controlled environment whilst developing healthy ways to control their emotions, rather than resorting to aggressive or harmful behaviours. Our program aims to support young people in this process, offering a safe space to train, reflect, and learn positive ways to handle challenging situations
